The work of the alchemist is a very precise transformation of the energy of the four elements that must be accomplished "with a gentle heat, and much attention" (Hermes Trismegistus). By this method, all that is gross and crude within us is separated from the subtle and pure, resulting in the emergence of the fifth element (the quintessence), and thereby liberation from suffering.
